Hiding From the Neighbors

Have you ever felt like a prisoner in your own home?  Unfortch I have (think bizarre neighbors).  As I returned home late Saturday night and put the car in the garage I was greeted by the following screams while exiting the vehicle:  "WHO DAT? WHO DAT? WHO DAT? WHO DAT? WHO DAT?"

You have got to be kidding me.

I stopped dead in my tracks before turning to face a beanie clad wannabe surf kid - and with the most withering glare and dead pan tone responded, "You can.not be serious (each word drawn out and spoken slowly).  Pause.  Stare. Silence.Glare.  I live here you moron."  And then with the spin of a heel, stomped off tossing a nasty look as I slammed the gate behind me.  Ugh!  Grow up much?  Two minutes later I was gripped with fear and foot in mouth-itis slapping myself for showing/telling the fool where I lived!!

As a result, Sunday afternoon you would have caught me doing this move:

I call it the "scurry to the trash cans before the no manners neighbors see you
and decide to plot revenge by spitting at you from their deck
or try to get you to go for a spin on a beach cruiser."
(last part=true story)

While racing as incognito as possible by the garage of the other crazy neighbors with the glowing alien on their tiki deck, I spotted a very dilapidated garage (I swear I don't live in a bad neighborhood, but I know you probably don't believe me anymore and I haven't even gotten to the time the SWAT team poured in yet...another time, another time) down the way.  Making it safely back into the house I later re-emerged triumphantly, Bed, Bath and Beyond coupon in hand, to be greeted by 80 degree weather (so much for "traditional" holiday temps) and seized the moment to embrace my inner hippie unleashing a pre-spring look.

So much for faux fur.

It's a case of sheer oversized tunic love.
I have no other words.
Except Spring are you here yet?  I think I'm ready.
For turquoise and more fringe...
and bell-bottoms and more bell-bottoms and clogs, clogs, clogs.
Sigh.
It's gonna be a long winter.
I wonder if this neighbor will consider selling me a piece of his beat down garage door?

Suddenly in the middle of holiday chaos (which makes me very sad because this is such a wonderful, magical time of year) the warm weather appeared and broke the hustle and bustle, providing a moment of reprieve.  Not to worry - I'm sure the grim reality of being nowhere near done shopping will be right there to greet me as soon as my eyes open in the morning.  Argh.

Dear Monday:  can you slow things down just a little?

Outfit details:  Joie tunic, Gap tank tops and bell-bottom denim, Dulce clogs, Brandy & Melville fringe bag, Dean Davidson ring, Bracelet and Necklace - handmade gifts from Africa, Target sunnies.

Oh the joy of neighbors ;) I definitely have my share of awkward encounters with the neighbors as well too. I am loving your beautiful Joie tunic (I'm obsessed with all of their pieces!) and gorgeous ring! We're enjoying a warm streak right now too and its making it hard to believe its winter!

Oh my what a weekend you had! Too bad we can't pick our neighbors like we can pick other things in life...like our clothes! We'd all be happy with our neighbors then.
I hope the weather stays nice down there this week! I would like a break from the cold.

OH man. I hate awkward moments like that. I clam up!

You look fabulous! Love the tunic!

Carrie, do take this the right way... I really think you might have to move. Like, for your own safety. However, you look, as always, fabulous. I love you pretty turquoise ring and as always, you're rocking the bell bottoms!

I loooooove your outfit and your inner hippie. :) I also love the fact that your neighbor shouted the famed chant of my beloved football team: WHO DAT! ha. Maybe he, too, was just a Saints fan and not a deranged teen?

Oh no Claire honey - this was absolutely a deranged college student. I think I scared him, but you never can tell. I'm hoping for lack of memory come morning!!

Ohh neighbors. Ive had my share of.... lets not get into it. Moving on.

Come stay in the guest bedroom! If you make the bed you win hands down as best guest ever. The competition would be Jared's brothers so I don't know how happy you are with that but hey, I'm just letting you know.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! as long as the door locks i'm in! or else we can all camp in there and i'll sleep under the tree like a 5 yr old. that's my fave!

Love your Joie tunic... and turqouise rings... and of course, your bellbottoms. I live near a bunch of sorority sisters- I share your pain. There is always something really obnoxious going on.

Carrie, you're totally inspiring me to be a hippie! Err as for weird neighbors, I'm not afraid of confrontation but not cool with people knowing where I live. I'd be scurrying everywhere too!

Crazy neighbors are truly the worst. Every time a house in our area goes on the market I pray to all that is holy that the new people aren't certifiable. So far so okay, but another house just went up for sale so let the chanting and candle burning begin.
Also I am nowhere near done with shopping, someone help me.

Must have been scary Carrie! I think you need a can of pepper spray... just in case.
I love love love your outfit. You pull off this look better than anyone I've seen. Tunics and bells were made for you.
Have a great day!!!!

ohmygosh, bless you for having to deal with those awful neighbors. I can't imagine. I was watching Sarah Palin's Alaska (don't laugh) and her husband had to build a 14 foot fence around part of their yard to keep their creeper neighbors out. Maybe you should consider? haha, kidding, of course. I love this oversized tunic. You make me nostalgic for spring/summer/anykindofwarmweather

Great backdrop! Love your ring!

Here in Oklahoma I have owned 2 houses and never had very friendly neighbors. Seems Okies think they gotta be rude. UGH!

You rock the hippie look every time! And you have the weirdest people living in your building ;) They make for great stories though, right?

Lila said...

Smitten with your inner hippie.

At least it is never boring where you live. If houses could talk.

In a weird way odd neighbours are strangely awesome - I have some real odd balls living above me and their antics keep me amused for hours. And I love your tunic - very hippy chic indeed!

Haha, I love your neighbor stories. I think you might live near an insane asylum, just check to be sure. It's oddly warm in my neck of the woods, too, so I am not in Christmas-mode right now either. But your outfit is super adorable, so at least you are taking advantage of the warmth!

Santina said...

It's not surprising that while feeling slightly stressed you'd turn to a mellow, hippie inspired look. I love that tunic! I'm such a sucker for clean white shirts - a button down, a good tee, a tank...if only I could stay clean for more than five minutes! Your accessories are perfect for this look - love the fringe!

This look is fantastic-who cares that it's far too warm to wear a scarf much less a Fair Isle sweater! I'm sorry your neighbors are awful; we have terrible ones, too. They'll knock on our door to tell us to take off our shoes (you know, those soleless ballet slippers do make a TON of noise), and finally I wrote them a note that we were doing our best to rig up a pulley system so that we could move about the apartment without ever putting our feet on the floor.

We haven't heard from them since!

You look so hippy chic, I LOVE this look Carrie. Your hair looks amazing like that. How did you do it?? What is the deal with your neighbors being crazy?? I hope you have some serious deadbolts on your doors!

80 degrees are you kidding me? I'll take it. we got 23* all last week. When it finally warms up to 50* all it does it rain. (Can I get a little snow if its gonna be so damn cold?!)

I bought some bell bottoms over the weekend and I'm so excited about them! This look is inspiring me to wear them so many different ways!

Unknown said...

Oh and 80 degrees there? It's in the teens here with a windchill in the negatives. Wanna trade?

Jen said...

Oh my gosh, are you serious? Some of the things that happen to you I just have to shake my head in disbelief!

But your outfit? Adorable as always!! Especially the pants! :-)

such a great causal outfit and what weirdos, people can be so crazy

LyddieGal said...

I have, on occasion tried to hide from my neighbors. And I know this is really awful - but the old lady who calls you over and traps you into 20 minute conversations about how sad and lonely life is, is the worst and the one I avoid the most.

Good luck with yours - hope they move out soon!

I highly suggest that you a) continue to hide from the neighbors b) steal that gate and c) wear outfits like this forever because I love them.

That is all!
