Red and Purple

When I was a kid I had the uncanny ability to slip out the door to school wearing the most bizarre things without my mother noticing.  I'll never forget the time I came home wearing a plethora of my favorite items only to have my mother screech/gasp in horror, "Carrie you did not wear that to school did you?!?" I couldn't understand the problem with combining a red velour fitted half zip, skinny black denim and fuschia socks.  Or how about a purple chenille v-neck sweater, turquoise corduroy trousers and red socks?  What's the big deal, mom?

To this day red and purple is a color combo that always catches my eye.  Last month I hit the jackpot of all jackpots at the flea market when I discovered not only the Eight Dollar Pants (yes caps are necessary), but also the most beautiful vintage 70's Missoni-esque halter dress.  Try to envision me jumping up and down while various onlookers stare from a safe distance.  It shouldn't be too hard if you're a regular reader.  I'm just going to spill it:  I wish I could turn back time.  I want to wear old school vintage treasures that would make Farrah proud.  I no longer want to pay more than $15 for anything.  My name is Carrie and I am an addict...flea markets are my poison.

Prepare for picture onslaught 2011.

Link Oxidized Ring and a green treasure from can't recall where)
The Other Hand (and a random truck)

I tossed the dress on last night with flip flops in honor of Taco Tuesday aka might have a few margaritas so better not be wearing anything that could land you on your head.  Suffice it to say it was some of the best $15 I've spent this year -- on the dress, not the drinks. FIFTEEN DOLLARS! *passes out*

$15 for the dress?! I don't even know what to say. Amazing. Why aren't there good flea markets out here?!

That DOES look missoni-ish. I love it! Cannot believe it was $15. Amazing.

Fits you like a glove. Are you having alterations made to these finds tailored or are you just lucky?

And fifteen bucks is loco. I need me some of this action. (Every time I think of it though, I always think back to the 'pit stain' hilarity from a few months ago!)

OH em GEE! Such an amazing outfit. I love the purple and red together! LOVE. And the JS 'Dany' continues to be a fav! I have black and gray. LOVE. Plus, you always crack me up. Love your stories :)

Very Missoni-esque, for sure! I was just checking out the F/11 collection this past Monday. Lots of vibrant colors, patterns and zigzags.. Nothing beats $15 though. And with those shoes? Priceless.

I don't care when a garment was made. If it fits you beautifully, and it is pristine, and it makes you feel good to wear it, I say go with it. You look wonderful. The VW van does bring back some memories.

I was reading and thought orange and purple is an interesting color combo, but then I saw that first picture and all I could say was O-M-G, this dress is stunning and it fits you beautifully. You had to buy it if it was anywhere near Missoni-esque!!

I love this and love even more that you wore it with those funky purple, velvet Dany's. I would be all over those if I wasn't afraid of that heel-too-high face plant. :)

Carrieeeeeeee! I have these very shoes and I have never worn them because I just couldn't come up with the perfect outfit to show them off. And I didn't want to wear purple with purple. I am now on the hunt for the perfect red dress...my tacky fantastic velvet shoes may just get some summer wear yet!

i am a firm believer that great fashion doesn't have to be expensive. sure it may take a little extra effort on your part to search through flea market chaos before finding such treasures, but i think it only makes such a great find that much sweeter. and damn! those heels!! i am definitely not woman enough for those. :)

Haha nah, Mr Radcliffe didn't arrive in London until Thursday morning so I knew we wouldn't see him ;)

I was hoping to see Matt Lewis (Neville) though...and we were supposed to meet up for lunch but they had him scheduled too tight so he couldn't do it :(

You look GLORIOUS in that dress, Carrie -- but the pyramid-stud bangle steals the show for me! Too pretty for words.

DYING Over the dress! Seriously you look AMAZE-Balls!!! And the price, SA-WEET! But I have to admit, the purple and red combo reminded me of that old ladies who wear purple and the red hats...not sure the group name, but that color combo regardless how how chic (which this is) reminds me of them! :)

LOVE YOU! -T

LyddieGal said...

Wow, I can not get over this look!! Not only was the dress a huge score, but the accessories! The pyramid stud bangle and green ring! The fold over leather bag!

I think you've matured quite a bit from you childhood color clashing - this outfit feels intentional and chic and CURRENT. You have not just fallen out of a time machine from the 70s, but rather a resort wear runway show.

Marcie said...

you have the best shape, carrie! I LOVE this outfit.

Yes, that documentary is on netflix. We streamed it two nights ago. Please let me know what the chef thinks!!

Reading about how you dressed when you were a kid made me laugh because I did EXACTLY the same thing! My mom tells me that it was kind of embarrassing for her, but now she wishes she hadn't let it get to her because I was "just being me".

This dress and those shoes are fabulous, Carrie! Perfect together.

I hope you're having a great day!

$15?! Lucky lady! That dress is too perfect for margarita evenings. And, you know, every other summer evening.
