The Bachelorette aka How to Lose All Respect For Yourself

Clearly this is not the usual post, but I'm standing on the edge of the precipice staring off into the black hole known as ABC Television wondering what just happened to me.  I've been robbed of 120 minutes of my life.  I don't have pictures in this post.  Are you still with me? Anyone? Anyone??

Confession:  I made the grave error of watching The Bachelorette last night and kind of feel like my brains fell out.  My head literally feels lighter as a result of having lost two precious hours of my life to completely useless garbage.  Of course I have no one to blame but myself and readily admit it, however who on earth are these producers appealing to?  Are women really buying into this nonsense that the entire thing, or at least a large part of it, isn't staged?  Don't be afraid to admit it if you're on The Bachelorette wagon.  I'm on a fact finding mission.  Waging war on The Bachelorette.  An army of one.

Okay here's one picture.  It pains me to even include it.
This is only so you can identify her.  Word.

A few short hours ago I witnessed Ashley Bachelorette --here out to be referred to as poor representation of women-- proclaim "love" for some guy she's known at this stage in the show for, what, 5 days?  However half a day later having been mockingly dumped by him and left in a pool of tears, the one she thought was The One, then go on to describe his kissing technique as lackluster in comparison to some other random guy she now thinks might be Mr. Right.  *shakes head profusely*

To watch a grown woman cry and lament endlessly over a complete stranger all while going on and on and on about her "fears and insecurities" to a bunch of other strange men who claim to be there to form a relationship with her, but let's face it are 90% in it for television face time, was nothing shy of painful.  Holy run on sentence Batman.

And so I ask you dear readers:  do you watch this trash?  Are you believing it?  Before I came to California I had a real pie in the sky, naive outlook on these shows.  "They're in it for love," I told myself.  Cut to scene and here I am 8 years later examining this scenario through a completely different set of eyes.  Last night Ashley Bachelorette surprised one of her dates with an impromptu hip hop dance lesson aka "her true passion" (DING DING DING the reason why she's REALLY doing the show to get her face out there and a foot in the door somewhere in the business---stay tuned for her attempt to get on Dancing with the Stars) and later a flash mob dance session in the middle of the Americana outdoor mall.  ~Aside:  Am I the only one who had no idea what a flash mob dance thing was? Old lady at 12 o'clock. ~   Surprise, surprise she'd really like to be a dancer.  Now I have no problem with her wanting that, but then for the love can you just say it instead of faking it like you're in it for true love?  A true love seeking woman doesn't kiss 30 guys in a 2 month period, hope The One will be in the crew, propose at the end, and then expect him not to be pissed mad when he sees her kissing the vast majority of the others and bawling her head off when some opt out as she laments having lost The One several times only to choose alternate The One(s).  These people aren't looking for The One.  They're looking to promote themselves.  And the odd one who does sneak in the mix is promptly snipped and left on the cutting room floor.  Or standing alone rejected at the end in a flood of tears wondering why they didn't see it coming.  They were sure they were The One. "Why didn't I see the warning signs?"  Don't worry you'll see them blast it out with The Bachelorette on the Reunion Special aka home of no humility when she shows up with the last one standing rubbing salt in the wound of the "other" almost One.

Why is this show still on television?  Better yet:  what on earth was I thinking when I allowed myself to watch TWO whole hours of it?? Never again.

ps- We will resume regular programming/posting later today.  This was just too much and I neeeeeeeed to dialogue.  Please discuss with me.  The cheese does not want to stand alone pondering this subject.

Abandon this Bachelorette. Resume watching RHONJ. Hope something as epic as the Baptism Brawl happens again. That was reality TV gold. I don't care if Jared lost brain cells due to my re-enactment! It was worth it!

Katie!! You're back!! Blogger may have fixed one error. Miracles happen every day. Maybe Ashley Bachelorette will find her man and they'll be a pair on DWTS. BAHAHAHAHAHA!!

HAHA oh gosh, i used to watch this show all the time but they have definitely changed it around the last couple years to make it kind of dramatic and off the wall to keep viewers i guess. i can't watch it if i wanted to, so sad! but i do like hearing the goss from ppl like you!

Rissy said...

I can't watch it anymore.

It's so over processed, packaged, and fake, I spend the entire time tweeting and facebook posting about how incredibly awful the show is.

I always joke that I want to be the bachelorette, but that's because I have about 0 desire to even have a boyfriend right now. I fully recognize the show for what it is--- a vehicle to mediocore notoriety, and I sooo want to be famous ; ) hahaha kidding... kinda of.... I mean I was a dance major in college...

Honestly though, really great post.

I used to watch this show back when it all started but now I am just getting kind of bored. Maybe is this bachelorette, but I just find it a little crazy that they fall in love so quickly.
BTW, this post was super funny, love it.

I totally agree with everything you said. however I sometimes watch to oogle at all the eligible bachelors still left in this world.

Luckily I have never watched a Bachelor or Bachelorette episode. I sort of think looking for a partner on TV is, by definition, a waste of time and energy. And they are doing it for money. Duh. From the snippets I have seen, they would do better on Match.com or some other service.

I'm hooked on this cheesy crap, Carrie. I find it beyond entertaining how they all stand there waiting to be publicly humiliated when they don't get a rose. I can't believe you aren't poking fun at the dude w/ the mask! What was that? He seems like he'd be one of your crazy neighbors!! xo

Totally admit it, I am on the bachelorette bandwagon. I crawl in bed every Monday night and watch it. I am torn between thinking these people are just kind of foolish or if they're in it for the fame. How many girls have you met in your life who fall for some total idiot in a few short weeks only to be totally crushed when he dumps her? Flash back to college days, this happens ALL. THE. TIME. So part of me thinks this is just those girls, now on TV. There are tons of crazies out there who just want a husband/wife and don't particularly care who they are. Also, Ashley is a dentist, so I'm not entirely sure she actually wants to become a dancer. Maybe she does... either way, I quite enjoy a couple hours of totally mindless TV a week, so I do my best not to over-analyze and just take it for what it is... mindless entertaining crap!

Marcie said...

I watch it but this season is disappointing. Ashley made such a fool of herself boo hooing over that guy. I actually have never seen a bachelor or bachlorette do this so early in the show. Ugh.

Marcie said...

And if she tells a room full of guys that they need to trust love and her husband is in the room one more time I am going to scream. Not what men want to hear Ashley!!!

Dear Carrie,

Not only do I love your blog, I am so happy I came to visit today. I am on the floor dying laughing over this post. I am not laughing at you, but laughing at what it has taken me years to come to terms with as well. Yes, I have been a long time watcher of the show. Several years ago I had the same rambling travel through the brain I thought I had. After every season I was miffed and swore I would never watch again. Yet I always did. I finally broke up with the show and I feel much healthier for doing so! The show is still on because of people like us :) I did watch the last Bachelor and because I couldn't stand Ashley on the last show, I put my foot down and am not watching her own train wreck! XO, Kel

I hope after this attack on your brain you will stop watching reality tv. It has grown into disgusting beast and as long as people keep watching, it will never die.
Do you know how many non reality show pilots that debuted last fall got renewed for a second season? One. (out of like 20).
Tv is in a sad state these days, and we need to stop accepting crap as entertainment.

I will say the one "in it for love" show I watched was Joe millionaire. He chose the sweet girl I wanted him too, fox gave them a million bucks to share, and they went their separate ways. Which was fine by me.

Closet Fashionista said...

Haha oh yea....ugh I do not watch that show....the only reality shows I watch are Next Top Model (for the clothes and cool photos), American Idol (not sure I'm going to keep watching though...) and Project Runway (for the clothes)....none of those other ones XD

ahha I love this post! I have been sucked into watching it from time to time, but still wonder how these women can believe that they will find true love on a staged show like The Bachelorette. Seeing as I just got engaged (thanks for your comment) after 7 years of dating, I know that it takes a lot more effort than just a few months to get to that stage in life. I love your take on life!

I'm not an avid watcher but tuned in yesterday and was all, "geez louise, is this what the show is always like?" It was a little bit crazy, with the whole Bentley dude drama. However, that sweet gentleman who went on a date with her right after Bentley was a gem, especially when he complimented her on her glasses, etc.

m_b said...

hahah "old lady 12 o clock!" that was hilarious.
but seriously. the problem with those shows is that they're all just looking for their 15 minutes. and there are people in america who buy into it! i know there are also the people who watch it for a good laugh and maybe they're curious but i don't see the appeal.

So out of the gazillion years that the bachelor/bachelorette has been on--I have only seen maybe 1.5 episodes--however, I am totally with you! HAHA. I think I felt robbed too of my time, but it does almost suck you in! I agree with Katie--abandon the bachelorette!

Anonymous said...

Thanks goodness it is not just me.

So I have like NO TV right now, but I still walked to a neighbor's house to watch this and surprise, I left at like 9:15. I felt mean as I laughed as Bentley pulled his stunts, but exactly like you....WHO FALLS IN LOVE AFTER 5 DAYS?!?! This show is a joke. The whole "roasting" thing is a joke too. I'm tired of it. And she is annoying.

Abandon ship! Seriously Carrie...I watched a few episodes of a past season of THE BACHELORETTE and I am convinced that I lost countless brain cells (and IQ points) during that time. It is mind-numbing; yet, sadly, addictive - if only for the humor factor. Regardless, I haven't watched an episode since. Instead I now devote my time to watching Jersey Shore. :P

Ha, I love you. I totally agree. I am a reality TV watcher (Keeping up with the Kardashians, the Real Housewives, etc.) but I cannot stand the Bachelor/Bachelorette series. I don't see the appeal. In fact, when I listen to the guys in their confessionals, it just makes me start to hate guys (which isn't fair because they aren't all like that!)

Not to mention, it's one of those reality shows that needs to be killed but they won't because they're still making money off of it. Kind of like America's Next Top Model. Originally a pretty good show, now it's just lame, with not even a glimmer of it's old self left.

Anyways, you made me smile this morning with this post so thanks! :)

i HATE this show {and all reality television actually}. yes, it is definitely all staged {i know people who have worked for these shows - they keep the participants up for days at a time with an open bar, refusing them sleep, then begin filming}, and greatly contributes to the increased sensationalization and dumbing of our society. when people watch this crap on a weekly basis, what else can we expect except that the viewers will also become just as overdramatic and unhealthy in their behaviors? these shows are not reality, and shouldn't be! thank you for posting about this. as a therapist, i feel really passionately about the negative psycho-social effects these shows have on people. plus, they're just plain stupid!

The Suburb Experiment said...

This is probably going to be way too long because I feel pretty strongly about this too. Let me break it down: A) she's an idiot who kind of deserves what she gets but B) I feel like the producers are trying to humiliate her as much as possible. A roast? And Rozlyn was kicked off Jake's season for less than Bentley was doing. C) These shows highlight why these (for the most part) morons are single. They have terrible taste (and willing to be on this trainwreck). And finally, D) ASHLEY QUIT WHINING AND CHASING THESE GUYS AROUND. GAWD. HAVE A LITTLE RESPECT FOR YOURSELF. You're talking these guys OUT of liking you. WEIRD.

Whew! There. All better. :)

Oh, I completely agree! I make the mistake so many time of watching the first episode and getting sucked in.. wondering what is going to happen. In all reality though (no pun intended, ha!) the show is absolutely demoralizing to all involved, and shows no sense of self-worth. It's degrading and down right pathetic. I have to sit back and laugh during some scenes of extreme immaturity and pure disgust.

i can't watch the bachelor or bachlorette.. i watched the VERY VERY first season of the bachelor.. the very first one.. and i was just so turned off.. and i watched it all the way to the end.. and he was kind of a jackass.. even tho he was totally nerdy cute.. sigh.. :( it's ok we have the real housewives to keep us warm at night.. atleast it's amusing haha.

Joyti said...

Somehow, I avoided the reality shows. And based on your description, I am really glad that I did!
It does seem pretty degrading to people - to throw yourself, along with a bunch of other people, on one person who you say you're in love with even though you don't personally know them, or to the be the bachelor/bachelorette and have to pick a person you don't really know as 'the one'. It mocks the concept of love. And of marriage.

Marie a la Mode said...

Yes, I watch it, and I soak up all the drama because I think it's entertaining. I don't agree with everything that goes on but it's kind of a nice escape from reality to watch other's "reality" if you can call it that. I do think some of them are on the show for love - look at Trista and Ryan who have been married for years, Ali and Roberto and Jason and Molly. I think some people have good intentions. Obviously Bentley doesn't but I gotta hand it to the guy because he is smart and is getting exactly what he wants - attention and publicity. And people like us are talking about him. We're the fools, not the contestants on these types of shows.

Valerie said...

I watched some of it and then fell asleep, but will pick the rest up on my dvr sometime this week. I agree that most of it is staged, but I really do think she's that delusional to think she was in love with a guy she hadn't even gone on a one on one date with and only knew for about 5 days. And she's a terrible dancer! She's also NOT A DENTIST!!! She's thinking about going to dental school! This stuff kills me. I beat myself up about watching this trash, but it always sucks me back in. Haha.

Hells no I don't watch either the Bachelor or the Bachelorette! I totally don't blame you for watching it last night thought, sometimes these train wrecks are just too much to resist taking one little peek. Which of course turns into a mouth wide open, can you believe what you are seeing, spectacle fiasco, and you realize you're still looking at it. Much like a real train wreck I would imagine.

But back to the point, I was disgusted with the whole premise of these shows from the start of the very first Bachelor season (waaaaay back in the day). I mean to go on a show with 50 other chicks and hope this dude you don't know from Adam picks you to be his wife??!! I can't even wrap my brain around it. And I feel the same way about the dudes who go on the show. Obviously, like you said, no one is in it for love on these things, but honestly I can't even figure out how the tv exposure is possibly worth the sheer humiliation of having ever been on the show in the first place.

And can we please just end it with the reality tv already? If I want to see real things on tv I watch the news. Everything else billed as reality is a) not real, and b) just embarrassing.

I didn't know what a flash mob was until after an episode of Weeds a season or two ago.

I have never seen an episode of The Bachelor or Bachelorette, but I completely understand your feelings. I had the same experience not too long ago with some show on VH1 or WE. I was just disgusted at the level of cattiness and drama and questionable "reality". I all I could do was smh. I'm always questioning the real intent of any contestant that goes on one of these shows.

I'm really enjoying reading your thoughts on this. Don't get me wrong--I'm not on my high horse condemning anyone who watches this stuff. Here's my issue: a. it's trash so the least they could do is not try to present it like it's real. b. makes me feel horrible when people think it is real. c. the contestants are phony. they're in it for fame. this in it for love stuff is so far from the truth. yeah okay so they had ryan and trista 20 years ago and then that other a**hole jason went w/the producers to pick one purposely knowing he was going to dump her for ratings and go with the other one after the finale. it was fixed. please.

that's 2 couples out of how many? i don't know b/c i don't watch on a consistent basis, but what i did get sucked into last night was so degrading to women AND men, as well as just.so.bad. i had to say something. am laughing so hard at some of your comments. thanks for sharing everyone.

John and I watch the Bachelorette-the opening scenes absolutely KILL ME and by the time we get to roses, we're crying with laughter and shut it off. It's terrible to admit how hysterically funny I find it all, but it's better than believing that these people are genuine.

You may have missed last week's gem in which Ashley took someone on a marriage first date. They picked out rings, cakes, and walked down the aisle. ON THE FIRST DATE. After something like that, you have to believe it's staged, or that humanity has been deeply destroyed.

I hate those types of shows and under no circumstances do i watch them. The women and men are clearly just in it for their 15 minutes of fame. I would rather drink a gallon of hot sauce than have to sit in front of a tv with that show on.

Micah said...

I won't apologize for enjoying the show for what it is -- entertainment. That point is illustrated by the success rate of the show (so far, I think only Trista, the original bachelorette, has made it -- she and Ryan have two kids and have been together for ... a long time). That said, I don't think it's completely ridiculous for someone to take this avenue to find love. There's no clear cut path to that means anymore. We hear all the time that one in five relationships begins online, my friends are still meeting guys in bars and some even reconnect with high school/college classmates they barely knew back then. I always hope for the best for the bachelor/bachelorette, because regardless of their motives, they are still human and if they're claiming they want to find love, I will believe them and hope for that for them.

All that said, I don't have extremely high standards for television ... or movies or books, for that matter. I tune in to be entertained and sometimes end up learning something about human behavior and relationships in the process. So, if that makes me stupid, I guess I'll accept it.

Tiffany Kadani said...

Do not get me started on this show! It is so fake. I loved watching the bachelor (I know, total double standard) because I loved seeing the man act stupid on his own accord. I don't think I could handle watching the bachelerette.

Annie said...

I have never watched and definitely don't plan on starting to (not after this post! lol) You summed it up perfectly: "These people aren't looking for The One. They're looking to promote themselves." I don't know why 75% (or more) of the stuff on TV is so successful!!

this free bird said...

@Micah - I really appreciated our dialogue last night. I don't think you're stupid at all. If you like to watch for entertainment then there is nothing wrong with that. Sadly, however, I do not agree that these people are looking for love. 98% want to be famous. Ashley FOR SURE wants to be famous and Mike Fleiss is making her look like a total fool as she attempts to do so. It's painful to watch. That William roast guy? Jumped at his chance for fame--"maybe I'll be roasting a celebrity next week" -- totally told on himself and threw her under the bus the first shot he got. Very telling. So yes, you can see a lot about human behavior by watching.

The guy with the mask? Totally naive and maybe even there for the right reason aka to find someone. Notice how the ones who are booted earliest are really disappointed? Those are the ones I think are there to find someone--THAT'S why they're released earliest. 9x out of 10 the Bachelor(ettte) only wants his/her 15 min w/someone it'll be easy to get rid of *cough* that Jake guy and the chick he picked *cough cough*. I didn't even watch that one and could pick it out 10 miles away.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that watching really stupid people make complete idiots of themselves on television makes us feel slightly better about our lives? I'm just conjecturing.

I totally watch this trash! In fact, I watch most trash on TV. My husband gets mad when he sees the DVR, but I'm all, "you're not my Dad okay." The last episode of The Bachelorette was super hard to watch. Bentley may have been staged, but she sure didn't know it. I felt we were starting to venture dangerously close to The Hunger Games territory (if you haven't read the series, it's awesome). I'm completely responsible for these shows being on air though.

omg, I literally just watched it on hulu just now. I understand it started out as a sincere show to help people find love... but when the dude is sitting there saying one thing into the camera, mocking the whole idea, and then lying to the girl.. you'd think that the producers would want to say something about it. I think ABC had it start out somewhat respectable, but if they're not careful (and protecting their contestants instead of fishing for drama and ratings), they're going to end up like those mtv and vh1 dating shows where its all full of morons. And ya.. the whole idea of someone dating 15 guys at once and settling on 'the one' at the end of a predetermined timeline is absurd to begin with.
