Lion Tamer

Fringe, mane, cats.  All of these things belong here.  (as opposed to one of these things just doesn't belong here)

About a month ago, the Chef's mom opened her garage and two Abyssinian kittens strolled in.  Well actually one darted straight into the house and the other followed soon after.  She hollered to the Chef as she pulled away, 'A cat's in the house.  Keep an eye out for it.'

You know the best part of the story?  This is totally normal dialogue in their world because these are cat people.  They don't question or freak out when cats find them, they just accept them into the fold.  The past few cats their family has had all either rolled up to their house or his dad's office and never left.  It's in the DNA of cat people.  We're cat seeking devices.  I was secretly ecstatic when I met his parents for the first time and saw cat paraphernalia littered throughout the house:  cat rug, cat thermometer, cat doorstop, cat figures in the planter outside, iron cat statues on the bookshelf, pillow stating 'The Cat's the Boss in this house'.  I made mental notes with glee.  All my cats have found me too.  Same with my parents.  I come from a long line of cat lovers...goes back generations.  No jokes.  We have the photos.

*Cue 'We are Family'*

His parents are out of town and he's catsitting.  This basically means all I did this weekend was play with kittens.  Well, one kitten and one cat.  The other kitten just stares at me and runs by...but I'll win him over.  He sniffed my hand on the way out the door yesterday and just 48 hours ago I won over his brother.  Victory is on the horizon, friends.  Stay tuned.

It starts like so:  locate your subject.  In this case hiding on the other side of the chair.
Speak softly.  Avoid direct eye contact. No sudden movements.
Pull out the big guns:  fringe.  This confirms you are of the same kind:  cats.
Draw 'em in with a a little jingle jangle.
(Chef's mom keeps tinfoil on her couch to keep cats off...not these two.
Tinfoil = toy as evidenced from random piece strewn here.)
Curiosity takes over!
Moments later:  friends for life.
When they start chewing your fingers and let you grab their teeth you're officially in.
Next up:  Socks.
One day they're sniffing your hand, the next they're sleeping on your head.
Can't wait.

P.S. --Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian readers!! I hope you guys are having a wonderful day with family, turkey and naps.  I've had a bunch of searches for the White Pumpkin
Ganache and Caramel Tart recipe the past few days.  If you need dessert here's the recipe.
Please have some for me :)

My aunt and uncle are cat people. They have 5 right now (I think) and they didn't go out and get any of them. I don't think they ever have.

PS - Need help styling my fringe boots. They're just sitting in my closet. It's sad.

Oh those boots are divine!! We've always had cats, but not at the moment. We see my hubbys parents cat every now and then - he has a real attitude problem. Still working on winning him over though.

This is the cutest thing ever! Good call on the "don't make eye contact". I try not to make eye contact with Lola sometimes, I think she sees it as a challenge and goes all crazy and starts chasing me around the apartment.

I cannot remember a time growing up when we did not have a cat so I guess we are cat people too! I want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving ~ although you are my crazy transplanted Canuk sista. I was feeling a bit like an orphan yesterday as my MIL is not having her dinner this week-end and Mom went to my brother's place ~ well yesterday afternoon the best neighbors ever invited us over for turkey dinner tonight ~ alas ~ an orphan no more. Hugs xo

B used to mostly ignore holly, but lately he's getting more into petting and playing with her, and she is letting him. I love that he now is officially a cat person too. But he got scared when she bit my fingers the other day wrestling. I assured him it was all just play, not real biting, but I'm not sure he believes me yet.

Ha! I just had a cat come up next to me and hug me. Literally. He put his arms around my neck and nestled his head in my neck.

And I'm serious when I say that if I had known you were so Loch Ness in love I would have brought back pebbles, souvenirs, and postcards and mailed them to you. But, yes, there was a sighting just days before I got there.

I wish I was there too. I'm crazy about cats and you've perfected the 'making friends' formula so well. What an awesome cat that is.
Wearing a fringe does have benefits, no?

Awwww, so cute! When I was little I always wanted to let strays into the house, but got in trouble when a male cat started spraying on the furniture... My Mom was pretty upset with me after that one...

Glad you had a great weekend cat-sitting, and love your fringe boots!

I sadly was a cat person, but after both my cats died I slowly became an allergy person...life is unfair like that. My cat used to lay next to me with her head on the pillow, and then look at me like 'what'? Boots are dangling awesomeness by the way.

Jessica said...

Oh man, I was never a cat person until I moved in with Dave. And to be fair, I'm still allergic to all other cats. Just not Bengals apparently. I knew I had won him over (the cat, not Dave) when he woke me up in the week hours of the morning, crawled on my stomach and went back to sleep.

Happy thanksgiving from a fellow Canadian! The kitties are so cute and so are those fringed boots!!!

kimbirdy said...

kitties!! i am the same way. the two cats i had throughout my adult life both found me. one passed away a couple years ago and the other is still happy and youthful. it's always made me nervous that we live in such a cat-populated neighborhood because we can't take in any more {the hubby is mildly allergic}. luckily there's a kitty rescue home around the block so i can still make sure strays i find get a good home.

Nikki said...

I love cats but my Husband claims to be allergic. I think it's a lie. I should pretend to be allergic to dogs.

Johanna said...

Um...can we stop and talk a minute about the boots because they are killing me big time. Those need to get in my closet, now~! And that cats are cute, too. Just sayin'!
