Pizza, Wine, Doing Nothing Much

Why is it so tough to achieve balance?  When things are really busy I adjust to the pace and go, go, go.  But when it slows and there's downtime it can be tough to relax and simply be.  I'm that person still looking for something to do, and then when it's time to speed back up you'll find me feeling sorry for myself for having not taken advantage of the downtime.  The pendulum swings from one extreme to the next and it's something I'm working on changing.

Yesterday the Chef had some free time so we decided to grab lunch at Pizzeria Mozza.  It just opened in Newport and the line's usually out the door, but we were in luck and got right in.  On the way there I fought feelings of guilt--that I should be doing something.  You know I used to have a good grip on this, but with the unpredictability in the economy it's made me feel like downtime is negative time and that's just not true.  Suddenly I said to myself, 'You are doing something.  You're going for lunch."  Seems simple enough, right? *shakes head*

I don't fall off the gluten wagon for much, but this is one of Mario Batali's spots.  Suffice it to say it did not disappoint...and I do believe I was once again able to get a handle on the fine art of doing nothing.  Just in time to get some work this morning.  Figures.

Fried Squash Blossoms with Ricotta.
In a word:  d-i-e.  They were just incredible!
Wine.  Don't have lunch without it.
I'm not much of a wine connoisseur, but the one I tried was great.
And they have a whole wall to choose from.
But the pizza was the motherlode.  The crust was perfect.
Perfectly perfect, in fact - if there is such a thing.
We had the Fennel Sausage and Bianca (cheesy goodness).
As I said the other day--it's still hot in Southern Cal.  Yesterday was 80 degrees
at noon.  Niiiiice.  So back on with the shorts, lace blazer and booties.
(And no I don't drive hunched over the wheel despite what this suggests.)
Thankfully I don't get sick of this combo...although it did rain today for a brief stint.
By the time I got my sweater on the sun came out. So goes it!

And yes--I am still living it out on Instagram.  Weak sauce or not, it's better than hauling out a camera in a restaurant--the phone was bad enough. Cringe

I get you girl, I always feel like I have to be doing something all the time too, but it's always good to take time off and enjoy. Specially such a lovely meal. XO

When you figure out the balance, let me know the secret. (With you on the wine, though. Having a glass right now.)

I wish I had more "nothing" time instead of so much to do but so little time. I did get some me me me time, I had 4 days off from work but 4 days went by so quickly. Oh and it is about lunch time here...That pizza in your picture looks pretty good right about now. =)

Oh gosh I know, unfortunately I just don't do balance well. Its an ongoing problem. I wish I had the answer.

Damn, that pizza looks good. For reals. And yeah, balance is pretty much an illusion for me so embrace the tilting nature of life (I may copyright that as a really sad new motto/slogan).

I'm the opposite actually, when the downtime comes I wallow in doing absolutely nothing so much so that I feel guilt and regret at not having done something worthwhile with my precious free time.

In other news, mmmmmmmmm... pizza...

The pizza looks so good. I love the rough crust on it rather than the neat ones you get on others.

Wow, that pizza really looks foreign to me, 'round these parts a crust must be thin to be acceptable as a quality pie.

The fried squash blossoms look tasty. Too bad all the zucchini blossoms were gone by august, or I might have had to try and make those.

I love the Mario Batali restaurants that I've been lucky enough to dine at. There's just an incredible amount of flavor, complexity and thought that goes behind every dish and execution. Am so glad to hear there's one in Orange County now!

YUM. Carrie, this looks so much tastier than the Doritos binge I just indulged in. Which I suppose isn't saying much, in retrospect, but it looks SO delicious.

Now you have me wanting pizza for breakfast Carrie ~ thanks for that ;o) I think most women are hard wired to feel the guilt when we take some down time. I usually do it at the time and then kick myself after thinking of things I should have been doing ~ it is not a win win that's for sure. xo

Squash blossoms!! And balance, what is that? I had three days off last week and at first, I felt like I needed to clean and stay "productive". By the 2nd day, I was like, this is awesome....and literally just hung out outside (we have had the perfect weather here for the last week), ate and was Lazy--yes with a capital L. ;)

Looks like a great lunch! Glad you relaxed a little.

not weak sauce! I'm totally into instagrams in a restaurant if the lighting is nice. I pretty much did d-i-e when I saw the ricotta squash blossoms in your feed.

Oh that did look like Mozza pizzeria and you happened to order my favorite pizza there! The super meaty one is also awesome.

These pictures make me both happy and sad for my low carb diet these days...backing away from the computer

Christ do I know how you feel. Sometimes I think I'm giving myself an ulcer, and it's only deserved about half the time. I think it's time for lunch and relaxing, dammit!

I feel this exact same way! I almost feel like I can never have downtime because then I feel like I am wasting time. And I completely agree that having the economy the way it is, doesn't help this feeling at all! It's hard for me just to sit down and watch a movie at home because I want to get things done on the computer then. I wish there was a formula in order to keep balance and be able to enjoy downtime when we actually have it. I guess we just have to keep reminding ourselves that we deserve times of rest and life is too short to not enjoy it!

Thank you so much for your comment about the look of my blog. Your feedback really meant a lot!

p.s. If you ever consider needing a header or something like you mentioned, I do graphic design or I know of some lovely ladies who do great work!

The food looks amazing and I love the look of their wine wall. I want something like that for my future home. Vintage books and wines, what do you think? Sounds like my kinda home library :)

Hope all is going well!

I looove squash blossoms!

I totally should've let you know we had a 7 hour layover in LA. You could have fed us alcohol and made it all better. None of our friends there wanted to see us from 11:30pm-7:00am. How rude! ;)

Why is it so hard to relax?
Even when I get myself to "relax," I still have to multitask (e.g., watch a movie and read a magazine while doing a face mask and a hair treatment).
