Misty Faded Memories

In my parents' house we have a lot of photo albums.  One of my favorite pastimes has always been  flipping through those old pictures to see my parents before they were married and then before they had me and my brother.  The hair people, the hair! As I've gotten older I've developed a keen interest in who my parents are and were as individuals, and then measuring myself against those characteristics to look for similarities.  No matter who we are, I think we all want to know where we come from.

My mom definitely carried on the picture taking tradition throughout my childhood.  We've got everything from first haircut to first day of school, mud pies in the field, the time my brother sat on my Barbie camper and squashed it (bloodcurdling shrieks), and teenage photos that basically entail a hand in the camera.  Thanks mom!  When I met Chris's parents for the first time, one of the things I noticed right away (aside from the cat paraphernalia--win) was their life on display throughout the house.  Not just formal family photos, but day-to-day type photos that spanned the years.  As we sat and talked, they shared vivid memories from those pictures that made for rich storytelling, and it's something I'll always remember.

This past weekend we were talking about how we basically haven't captured diddly squat of most of this past year on film. Or whatever it's technically called now. Time? WHO HAS THE TIME? Well you'll have a lot less of it if you can't remember it...SAD FACE.  Aside from time there's lugging around the camera.  Ever go to a restaurant supply store with a big ol' camera? Uh yeah, once. That's not happening again.  Rather than aiming for perfection we've decided to just Instagram or iPhone pic until we come up with a better solution. Or another hour in the day.

Scenes from this past Saturday:
I get a shot of my shoes on the way out the door.
Moments later I'm at the restaurant.
Okay not exactly moments later, but like around two hours later.
You see there was this pitstop at Target that entailed tribal print shorts and a maxi skirt...
soooooo I guess Target and I are back together then?
*Eyeroll*

This is what we call '20 minute breaks in the car'. That time when you can talk freely and candidly about your day in an attempt to determine what needs to be returned to Target.  And whether or not you might need to come into the restaurant for Happy Hour after all.

Mix of my faves on the weekend: Monkey Sweater-Madewell, T-James Perse, Shorts-Current/Elliott, Necklace & Bag-Vanessa Mooney, Shoes-Arnold Churgin.

I know what you mean...we have TONS of photos and videos from before I was born up until now. But now that I'm on my own more I don't really take photos of day to day activities (except instagram)...I should try to do that more

I freakin love those shoes! And I just visited Free People for the first time and totally know why you are so in love.

Target and I are not together at the moment.

GOSH I love those shoes. And your legs--damn, girl! As for Target, I bought a brightly colored patterned maxi dress there recently that I looooove. But with my wacky 2-job schedule these days, it's sad to say there's very little time for shopping. :(

The very first thing I did when Dave visited my parents for the first time was haul out the old photo albums - in all of my 3rd grade spiral permed glory.

And I suspect we had the same Barbie camper. It was my favorite thing ever. Little boho Barbie goin' for a drive.

I'm one of those people that's dreadfully old fashioned in the sense that I still get most of my family and personal photos developed and sorted into albums, etc. for the simple reason of having some type of permanent record of my memories to share with family and, maybe one day, my children.

P.S. I'm sure Target is ecstatic to have you back!

I have always loved candid shots in frames around house which I used to do. Although I do love digital photography I hate that I no longer seem to get the actual shots printed and in an album let alone a frame. Must try harder to stop this vicious cycle!

I try to take more photos too, instagram helps a lot. Mostly I'm just lazy and don't want to pull out my phone, but I would like more photos to look at and show my kids someday

Okay, first, I love those shorts. My mom has hundreds of photo albums -- no joke. Scrapbooking is a thing for her. I'm trying to remember to take more and more pictures because I always want to have the memories!

You have got me thinking...I haven't taken much pictures in the past year either. I used to take so many. And I, too, have my childhood preserved in pictures. I need to take more now...and remember these good years too.
It has been SO long since I've caught up with comments. How terrible I've been with that. I'm thankful for Twitter and Instagram, so I still feel connected in some way to the world.
I hope you are well!

I think it's because when you are a kid, everything you do is cute. you don't have to try, you just are.
It's probably why we take a million photos of our pets. them sprawled out in bed or giving the stink eye is adorable.
If anyone dared photograph us like that we'd probably kill them.

So I think the challenge of photo documentation is a lot harder when we are grown.
And lugging around the camera is a pain.

Now what is this about tribal maxi skirts... do I have to go to target?

My mom has every moment of our little lives documented on film–until about age 5. She realized she was spending more time behind the camera than interacting with us, and I've definitely caught on to leaving the camera behind. But I would love to capture more of our lives–I just have to pull out the phone, and really, how hard is that?

I need to be better about that...and I need to force myself to be in more photos of our day to day life! I'm usually the one behind the lens. Love your mocs!

J and I were just talking about how bad we are about taking snapshots and how we need to document more of our lives. Must. Get. On. That.

And um those shoes are MONEY!!!

I was the complete opposite of you. We didn't have very many pictures of us growing up and now I'm obsessed with documenting life through my camera.
