Twists and Turns--Hair and Otherwise

Remember last week when I was going on about work projects and eating cookies for breakfast, lunch and dinner due to busy schedule?  Well what a difference a week makes.  Suddenly it's dead in the water, deadlines having been met, and now there's an uneasy stillness in the air that has resulted in me spending far too much time perusing the internets obsessing over hairdos.  More specifically I've been freaking out about the impending haircut that will take place on Thursday.

Yeah, yeah it's superficial and the least of concerns seeing as people in the world need food, shelter and healthcare.  I get that.  And am actually among some of those people on the healthcare front, but that's another blog for another time.  This one's about life and hair and how to make sure I don't walk out looking like the victim of a drunken Edward Scissorhands (top 10 fave movies of all time).  Here's one of my issues:  I get to talking to the haircutter and before you know it we're laughing our heads off about something.  Cut to scene (aka my head) where I've not really voiced what I wanted therefore the individual has just kind of gone off willy nilly.  The next thing I know the blowdryer's on and it's kind of like opening a surprise gift:  you're hoping for the best, but bracing for what may turn out to be not the best whilst doing your best to paste on a smile that won't show your true feelings.

Am I the only one who gets carried away talking to the hair people?  They're truly some of the most fun people out there in my opinion.  Anyway, I had my lid colored yesterday and it is absolutely beyond fabulous.  I can't unveil due to inability to take a picture of myself.  I just can't do it.  I feel like a cuckoo bird.

Instead let us pause and have a moment together as I prep myself to maintain a level of seriousness on Thursday.  I'm focusing on the following pictures and chanting as follows:  "I'm in a hippie phase and don't want much taken off.  Please just bring some life and shape back to the hair."  In my more frenzied moments I practice, "Put those scissors down!! Didn't you hear me say I want no more than 2 inches taken off?!"

I don't even have this much hair to begin with, but this would be a dream hairstyle to me.
Somewhere Vanessa Hudgens remembers having these days--and curses her now short locks.
Maybe not, but I can't help wondering.
This is pure magique--her, her hair, the straggly ends--all of it.
Yesterday's conversation with self went like this:  "I think I'll get bangs.  You can't get bangs.  Look at her bangs.  I wonder if I could pull off bangs?  No you can't.  Ever since your brother dropped that can on your head when you were five you can't get a proper part."
Hello ageless woman.
Why does your hair never frizz?
And can we please discuss how to replicate prior to Thursday?

Either way the guy I'm going to is a hair genius and will probably do most of whatever he wants anyway.  A couple years ago he gave me a great cut so I'm looking forward to visiting him--albeit with a might bit of trepidation.  Wish me luck.  He's a cutter.  And I don't mean that in the self-inflicting pain way. If you have any other images I could share with him, please do feel free to suggest and/or forward.  The more focused I can be going in, the better chance I'll have of staying focused and selling my case for longer vs. shorter hair.

Did I mention I haven't cut my hair since the end of December last year? Uh yeah, get there.

I went through my share of traumatizing salon experiences until one of my best friends became a stylist. So now its fine seeing as I can text her in the middle of the night if I'm having a hair crisis but I digress.
If you do any kind of bang/fringe/etc keep it long enough that you can pull it or pin it back. The only times I've ever really hated my hair like that is when it was a tad too short and was constantly getting in my eyes. Maddening.

Have fun at your hair appointment. I personally love Nicole Richie's hair style, love it!

Bring photos!! That is my recommendation as a former stylist. It helps to see what you are looking for so that you know you are on the same page. With your gorgeous face you could pull off just about anything, Carrie!! xo

Yeah, I'm a talker too when it comes to hairstylist time so I know what you mean. So what I do is always take a photo and make sure that I am holding it as we walk over to the chair. That way as I chatter away at some point the stylist notices the photo clutched in my little hand and asks about it at which point I remember why I'm there and give my instructions.

Also don't say how many inches you want off, show with a pinch motion with your fingers "this much'. I used to think that an inch was a constant measurement but I've found that an inch to me is not an inch to the stylist. Stylist inches are like dog years.

When I'm in a long phase I mention that I'm growing it out every two seconds while we talk, I'm sure I sound a fool but if I don't before you know it snip, snip and it's all on the floor.

Haha, I'm the opposite, I hardly ever talk to the hairdresser, but then again I hardly get mine cut XD The last time I got mine cut was probably around the same time as you :p
I loooove Vanessa's hair! Mine is sorta like that when I make it wavy :)

Take a picture or 3 with you. It will help remind you to tell the stylist what you want. And I think the hair cut is the most important of the fashion choices. It's the most difficult decision to change once made.

I am still trying to grow some back, not all of it, just a few inches...please! Can't wait to see what you do. I vote against bangs. For what it's worth.

Mu best friend does my hair so I trust her completly (except that one time when she gave me a mullet!!) I need a hair cut, good reminder!

Just go in with a plan to stay focused and tell the hairdresser you only want 2". You'll come out looking like the wonderful, ageless Demi!

when it comes to longer hair styles, i think a lot of it comes more from what you are willing to do with your day to day styling than the cut. you can get layers and angles and what not - but if you dont put the time into getting those perfect waves, flat ironing out every last bit of frizz or keeping those bangs in check, than your hair cut is only going to look amazing for about a day.

I always think getting my hair cut is going to leave me with bouncy, voluminous hair. Nope. I covet big hair. :)

I think long tresses are good for any girl.

I took my stylist number out of my phone. The last 2 times I called for an appointment she act like I was putting her out by calling. So this last time I went and got it cut by a student at Clary Sage College. She did great!
I am looking forward to my hair being really long but I dont think I could go that long with out cutting it. Hope your appoinment goes well.

I am the same way, going for long periods of time without cutting my hair. best of luck, can't wait to see!

You can totally rock bangs...are you kidding? They would look amazeballs on you!

I had a few traumatic experiences at the hairdresser so I mostly cut my own hair now. The only time I've been in the last few years is for extension application/removal with a trim.

But I have been contemplating bangs lately too. Which I should leave to the professionals. I've heard that pictures are the way to go. Which means I'll be snagging that one of la Richie for my own inspiration file. LOVE it.

December? Wow! I always love your hair and I can't wait for Friday's post about the haircut!

your always looks fabulous, but i definitely know the feelings anywhere from disappointment to panic after a trip to the stylist. i've had so many terrible cuts, many because i didn't voice my opinion or because the hairstylist didn't really understand thick, curly hair. i found one stylist who was pure magic. unfortunately, she moved and i lost track of her. i still google her name from time to time hoping she's back in LA. sigh... can't wait to see your new do!

I cry. Every time. This morning I zipped my hair INTO MY PANTS and realized that a haircut every Christmas isn't really acceptable anymore.

God Speed.

Loving Nicole Richie's hair...just effortless and chic! I have such a love/hate relationship with my hair...I've been wanting a long bob but every time I go I chicken out!! Can't wait to see your new do! xo

going in for a haircut is stressful. I tend to be on the shy side so not much talking comes from my lips just gasps when I see hair hitting the floor.

Elle Sees said...

I am shy with the stylist when she cuts because I feel like she will mess up or something. That's weird, I know.

Grace (The Stripe) said...

Ha! I never cut my hair, either. And I start to sweat when I feel like they are taking too much off. Good luck... can't wait to read more!

I was hoping that you would do something drastic and fabulous!! I get mine cut every six weeks now and I love and trust my stylist so it is a routine for me. Stop stressing ~ you are beautiful and even if it is only 2 inches (yes only) it will grow back. Was that bitchy?? xo

Perfect timing, Carrie - I'm having my hair cut in just over three hours for the first time since April. And coming from someone who normally has their hair trimmed every six weeks, five months is a long time! I'm nervous too because I'm trying out a new stylist and for some reason, they don't all understand how to cut curly hair.

I vote for the Vanessa-type hair. A fringe - bangs, whatever - usually end in tears in my experience. Always look so good on someone else. I'm sure you'll look great with them if you decide to go that way though. Good luck!

I ALWAYS get carried away chatting with my stylist and I ALWAYS walk out with my hair just a titch bit shorter than I would have ever hoped for. Can't wait for the after pics :)

Hopefully you found a salon that you go to regularly or at least in your case last December. I get my hair cut every 4 to 6 months which my stylist thinks I am crazy and knows me by now that she cuts it so it looks good grown out. Frizz? Know what works for you; I've been going to my girl for 10 years and I still say no thinning shears as it makes me frizzy.

Long, layered hair forever! I hope you get a great cut and do remember - at least it grows out!

p.s. Seriously Demi, do you age or what?!

Although I'm obsessed with cutting my hair, slightly... my sister is like you, she rarely even dyes it.. But I can understand how you feel, it's definitely not an over night decision. But, at least hair does grow quickly and can be transformed.

You chose some beautiful ladies here. Demi has such a timeless and sophisticated look all around. Good luck with the new cut!

I never get my hair cut. Too expensive. Mine's long enough (and wavy enough) that I just chop dead ends off myself sometimes. HA! But I looooooove my hair girl (she colors it, gives me brazilian blowouts, and cuts it about once a year). It's like a dual hair and therapy appointment. I'm going to see her Saturday morning and cannot WAIT.

Love the Vanessa Hudgens hair. I like Nicole's hair but think she looks a bit cracked out in that pic. And it's true that Demi doesn't age, but apparently neither do you!
