Catching the Crazy

We got a late start on Sunday, but decided to head over to the local flea market to take a quick peek anyway.  Suffice it to say a couple days of pouring rain held crowds at bay, but there remained some interesting cats to see (did you catch Sunday's post?) as well as a lot of really cool finds in amongst the junk.  I'm sorry, but I have to call a spade a spade.  I mean is anyone really interested in a 25 year old faded out plastic Garfield that's missing a leg?  Anyone? Anyone?

Thanks to brisk temperatures there were very few people perusing the racks, so I was able to take my time.  Somewhere in there I think I caught it:  the flea market bug.  The thrifting fever (not to be mistaken with Bieber fever just to be clear).  Second, third and fourth hand mania.  Whatever you want to call it there was a moment of clarity where I realized I'm finally getting the hang of this, and could actually select and get excited about picking up a couple things.  Okay one thing, but there were almost 5.  And 2 days later I'm actually regretting the 4 things I left behind.  Can you imagine??

The bridge into I Get It Land.
Seriously though - that's how much rain we got in SoCal - it was nuts.
Piles of amazing vintage Asian treasures.
I'm not sure what this look/stance combo is.
Consider it the look of barely able to contain myself + don't want fabric to hit ground.
If you could only see how sick trick it truly is!!
This falls into the 'not sorry I left it behind' category.
While this one falls into the 'what was I thinking leaving that mother behind?!' pile.

And of course it was cold enough to bring out the Technicolor Dreamcoat again (last seen here).  I never tire of it and apparently neither does anyone else.  I've been stopped in the street, touched by random passersby who can't control themselves - that makes for interesting conversation -, and a woman at the flea proclaimed, "this is so you!  I mean you're wearing your rug and everything!"  Come to think of it I hope she wasn't referring to my hair.  Maybe I'll see her next time so I can ask - I can hardly wait!

You've gone nuts with the fevers lately - the fever fever, Beiber fever, thrifting fever... I think all that's left is disco fever.

I don't have the patience to trawl through one-armed Garfields for the good stuff but I wish I did. I'm sure there's some good finds in there. (Plus, some things just make my hands feel dirty.)

okay um annelise i was totally packing purell the first few times i went and mid-way through an hour or so in had to go home, have a shower and then go have a drink. i was freaking dizzy and felt filthy. somehow this time it was like the fog lifted...maybe it's the bieber fever?

oh and ps-i totally watched saturday night fever until 4:30am last night/morning and i'm a hot mess. look out. i can't be responsible for what i start wearing and saying. consider this a warning.

josie - thk you love - i think you could do it though. for reals. it's all in the lid.

I share Josie's sentiments - wish I could carry it off with aplomb like you do. And if I saw someone wearing this coat I'd want to touch it too - it has that vibe about it.

I love the coat. No wonder people stop you. I love thrifting. I went last night. It's almost a spiritual experience for me. The hunt, the thrill of a deal, and then bringing that baby home. I love every second of it, even the evil stares from my boyfriend for staying way too long.

I love thrifting!!! :) but sometimes I am not so good at finding good stuff like a lot of people do.. i look and see a raggid old fabric, and others see a whole outfit out of it. lol. :) I do love you litttle sweater jacket too though.. no wonder you had lots of people commenting!

Hey fashionista. I remember way back during my childhood years, I would get so excited to go down to the flea market. Ever since I was little I was always on the search for a good bargain. There aren't any flea markets here, but I am really looking forward to my California trip at the end of this month. I am looking forward to checking out a few antique shops, thrift shops and of course going down to the flea market to see what treasures I might find. =)

I need to get back into catching a good market. Problem is the winter here...but sometimes they're great and sometimes they're down right scary and sketchy.

That jacket is perfection on you. BUT people need to respect the do not touch rule haha

Once bitten, there is no going back. I'm a life long flea market junkie. We don't have good ones here in Phoenix but I go to the auctions instead - also addictive.

Jamie said...

I too am having a thrifting moment...except mine solely involves clothes. My latest obsession is Crossroads. I just got a pair of Guess by Mariano cargos tags still on, for (wait for it) $9!!! Sorry, I am still beside myself over that one.

PS. Yes, never tire of the dreamcoat. Cozy, colorful, perfect for this crap weather!

I love your technicolor dreamcoat, Joseph! I saw a purse like yours in H & M the other day, I almost bought it and now I'm regretting I didn't. I need to go back!

Ex-nay on the creepy aliens-ay!

That is the perfect outfit for thrifting and I am not surprised strangers tried to get in on that ;)
I love flea markets for that thrill-of-the-hunt feeling and the possibility of finding something unique, but leaving the fabulous-yet-completely-impractical thing behind makes me sad!

lol I wonder about some of those items too, like plastic cartoon figuries that are stained, really, anyone gonna buy that!? and lol love your coat!

I really really love your dreamcoat. It's gorgeous. I tried on some funky Free People long sweaters this weekend (on sale at my fave boutique) and thought of you but they looked terrible on me so were quickly relegated to the NO side of the dressing room. Also, there was the most amazing pair of brown suede Report knee high boots. They were . . . perfect. And they were on sale from $145 to . . . $29. AND THE SMALLEST SIZE WAS AN 8.5. I very nearly cried. And then convinced my friend to buy them.

I'm not so much a "thrifter"--I went into a goodwill this weekend and was overcome with a sense of depression and germs. Wow, I sound like a full fledged snob. But flea markets seem way more doable to me, for some reason. Maybe cause they're outside? Who knows.

Annie said...

yesss, you got to wear the dreamcoat again! :) Love it! I also LOVE flea markets. They're just so fun even if you don't buy a single thing.

Ashleigh said...

Thrifting is the best!! I can't get enough lately - used to I would die before buying/using something preowned. Living in the city def. changed that, great free furniture on the alley, sure, I'll take that!!

That is a tonage of rain!!

Anonymous said...

I dont even know what the flea market situation is around here, but I'm pretty confident its a hot mess and I'd never find anything good. I probably need to just go to SoCal. Yeah. That seems like a better plan.

P.S. What did you think of the Biebs haircut?? :)

This is so exciting, Carrie! I want to see the stuff you brought home! Seeing that dress that you left behind makes me feel sick to my stomach. Can you go back??? I'm obsessed. It's so Mrs. Roper meets Carol Brady (in the best possible way). What flea market did you go to? I don't think I've ever been to one in LA.

Hope you had a great weekend!

I recently went to a Ruffles and Rush vintage market and I too have come down with the fever (not justin to be clear)

I purchased some vintage whiskey bottles and decanters and a vintage buffet that I am still deciding what to do with.....help

Thrifting sounds so divine-I haven't done much of it on the West Coast, but I NEED to get to it!

And horray for the Technicolor Dreamcoat. I selfishly want the weather in LA to always be appropriate for that coat!

Amber said...

the Technicolor Dreamcoat is such a stunning piece, i would probably stop you in the street too just so i could tell you how awesome it is

Haha, your hilarious!
Amazing blog post, wish I could have been at that flea market! Ahhh, just thinking of it now...
And might I say, lovely rug your sporting!
(don't worry, I'm not referring to your hair)
no, but really, I love it!
Looks like there was some really great stuff there, but at like 5000 miles away, I could hardly nip out for the day from England.
I don't quite think my bus service goes that far...
That dress that was in the 'why did I leave it behind pile' was beautiful! Why DID you leave it behind?! :)
